FIELD: electricity.

SUBSTANCE: complexes of fundamental harmonics of voltage and current at the beginning and at the end of the network are measured. In a network model, voltage and current measured at the beginning of the network are converted to a group of voltages and currents supplied to points of assumed faults on the side of the beginning of the network. Voltage and current measured at the end of the network are converted to a second group of voltages and currents supplied to points of assumed faults on the side of the end of the network. Overall reactive and active power delivered to the points of assumed faults by the first and second groups of voltages and currents is determined. The point at which overall reactive power is equal to zero is determined. The value of the overall active power at that point is determined. That point is considered to have a real damage if overall active power is not negative at that point alone. Otherwise an additional signal is generated and it is determined which of the points with zero overall reactive power has the minimum value of the magnitude of the additional signal, and that point is considered to be damaged.
