FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: method of treating sodium contained in linked open pores of a structure enclosed in a cladding, wherein said pores also contain a radioactive substance. Said method includes the following successive steps: a) making at least two saw-cuts on the entire length of the cladding; b) converting sodium to sodium carbonate via carbonisation by bringing the structure into contact, through the saw-cuts, with a chemically active gas mixture containing water vapour, carbon dioxide gas and a gas which is inert with respect to sodium, such that expansion of the carbonate causes opening of the structure and the cladding, starting from the saw-cuts, as a result of which the carbonisation reaction spreads into the structure.
EFFECT: invention enables to minimise the number of operations required in the presence of a radioactive substance.
