FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: material containing pieces with different effective atomic numbers is fed in pieces into an analysis zone; the material is irradiated with a collimated beam of primary X-ray radiation, the cross-section of which is extended in the horizontal direction, wherein the height and width of the beam are selected depending on the coarseness of the separated material; scattered radiation is detected; the signal is compared with a threshold value; the useful mineral is selected based on the comparison result. Secondary radiation is detected by a detector on the side of the incident primary radiation; the screen material used is material with an effective atomic number, which is intermediate between the effective atomic numbers of the separated material; the scattering screen is made from material with Zeff which is intermediate between effective atomic numbers of the collected and released material, and the detector is protected by a fluorescent radiation filter.

EFFECT: high efficiency of the separator, more types of separated materials.
