FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to refractory structural materials for making cordierite-based heat resistant ceramic articles which can be widely used in metallurgy, mechanical engineering and chemical industry as refractories, filters and catalyst supports. The mixture for producing cordierite ceramic contains components in the following ratio, wt %: kaolin 7.1-77.34, pyrophyllite 8.0-70.7, aluminium hydroxide 0.46-16, magnesium oxide 13.0-13.52, magnesium fluoride 1.2-2.5. In optimum versions of the invention, the mixture contains chemically activated kaolin and pyrophyllite, the pyrophyllite being finely dispersed with particle size of 2-4 mcm.
EFFECT: reduced loss of synthesised material, obtaining cordierite ceramic with an oriented plate-like structure, having a low coefficient of linear thermal expansion and higher mechanical strength and thermal resistance to cyclic sign-alternating thermal loads.
