SUBSTANCE: methods and apparatus enable a wireless network to dynamically alter or set a call mode, e.g. by optimisation based on one or more network parameters. In one version of the invention, a wireless network is a cellular network (e.g. 30 UMTS or LTE), and both base stations and cellular user terminals dynamically configure the call mode based on any required characteristics associated with network parameters. Such flexible call mechanisms can be communicated to network users using several techniques.

EFFECT: users having user terminals with corresponding functionality can improve performance quality and reduce power consumption of their terminals; base stations also benefit since they are able to use freed cellular network resources to provide other services, wherein users with older terminals are not inconvenienced.
