FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: cooling bath includes at least one longitudinal section (1) including central capacity (31) for submersion into it of processed head of rail, feed header (2) for fluid medium supply, two secondary capacities (32) located on sides of central capacity (31) for collection of cooling fluid medium when it overflows the upper edge of primary central capacity (31). Along secondary capacities (32) there installed are drain pipes (12) located so that each pair of the corresponding drain pipes (12) can be connected to transverse pipe (13) installed under bottom of section (1) and connected in its turn to a bypass circuit of cooling fluid medium. Besides, on drain pipes (12) above secondary capacities (32) there installed are retaining elements (16) that are adjusted as to height and form a through hole for a rail head. At least one retaining element (16) of each of their pairs has the possibility of being turned about pin (17).
EFFECT: providing stable and uniform flow of cooling fluid medium contacting a submerged rail head, throughout the bath length at continuous fluid medium exchange; as a result, rail head cooling speed is optimised.
