FIELD: radio engineering, communication.

SUBSTANCE: method is realised by forming a plurality of current radar images of the observed area in an Earth-based coordinate system using an onboard antenna aperture synthesis radar station during flight, each image formed for a specific calculated flight altitude value, and the comparing said images with a prepared reference radar image. Comparison of each formed radar image with the reference image is carried out with estimation of the maximum value of a function which reflects cross-correlation of said images. The estimate of the flight altitude is that value where the maximum of the function which reflects cross-correlation of the current and reference radar images is highest.

EFFECT: high accuracy of estimating aircraft altitude and broader conditions for possible use of onboard radar equipment using antenna aperture synthesis.
