FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: in a part of the volume of the sealed envelope of the tube, plasma is generated using high-frequency electrodeless electric discharge; ions are drawn from the electric discharge zone and accelerated towards a neutron-producing target lying outside the discharge zone. Capacitive electrodeless high-frequency discharge is used and the ion-accelerating electric field is formed by applying a positive high potential to the plasma. The disclosed apparatus has a sealed envelope, a neutron-producing target in a target plane and, outside the envelope, a system for exciting high-frequency electrodeless electric discharge in order to generate plasma in a plasma plane. The discharge exciting system has electrodes adjoining the walls of the envelope, said electrodes exciting capacitive discharge. The plasma plane further includes a high-voltage electrode and the earthed shield/extractor with a centre hole is tightly insulated from the volume of the envelope.
EFFECT: longer life of the neutron tube.
