FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: method involves dissolving polysaccharides in a molten inorganic salt hydrate. A reaction to convert the dissolved polysaccharides to monosaccharides is then carried out. The monosaccharides are then converted to basic chemical products. The basic chemical products include sorbitol, xylitol/arabinitol as well as isosorbide and anhydrosugar. The basic chemical products are then separated from the molten inorganic salt hydrate.
EFFECT: invention enables to convert polysaccharides to isosorbide, sugar alcohols and anhydrosugar with high degree of conversion with reduced formation of by-products and simplifies the process.
