FIELD: physics; geophysics.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to geophysics and can be used in off-shore seismic exploration. The invention discloses a method and a system for controlling the form and distances in arrangement of seismic cables towed behind a survey vessel (10). Each seismic cable is controlled by steering devices (16) in the cross direction, placed along its length at specific nodes to achieve a given distance from a neighbouring seismic cable. One of said real seismic cables used as a reference for other real seismic cables is controlled to achieve a given distance from an imaginary or phantom seismic cable which is virtually towed together with the real seismic cables.
EFFECT: high accuracy of exploration data.
