FIELD: radio engineering, communication.
SUBSTANCE: method is intended to determine distance estimation error using a sonar system mounted on an underwater mobile carrier relative a fixed reflector. The method involves emitting probing signals using the sonar system, determining the time of emission, determining the time of receiving an echo signal, measuring the speed of sound, determining the difference between the time of emission and time of receiving the echo signal T, calculating distance, measuring eigen velocity Vsob, determining the angle q0 between the position of the fixed object and the direction of movement of the sonar carrier, determining radial velocity of the object Vrad based on two consecutive probing signals, and the distance estimation error bD is determined using the formula: bD=0.5((Vrad/cosq0)-Vsob)T.
EFFECT: determining error in estimating distance to a fixed reflector while the sonar carrier moves underwater.
