FIELD: medicine.
SUBSTANCE: blood serum of a patient suffering from acute optic neuritis is examined for a difference of optical densities at a wave length of 492 nm of the test serum and the reference serum that is presented by a mixed pool of healthy individuals' serums; that is followed by recording peak latencies P100 of visual evoked potentials (VEP) and an amplitude N95 pattern electroretinogram (PERG) for a reference stimulus. If the difference of the optical densities of the test serum and the reference serum is 0.2 or more, a decrease of amplitude N95 PERG for the reference stimulus is 10% and more as compared to the reference, and the peak latency P100 of VEP is prolonged by 10% and more as compared to the reference, a high risk of developing multiple sclerosis is predicted. If the difference of the optical densities of the test serum and the reference serum is less than 0.2, the decrease of amplitude N95 PERG for the reference stimulus is less than 10% as compared to the reference, and the peak latency P100 of VEP is prolonged by less than 10% as compared to the reference, a low risk of developing multiple sclerosis is predicted.
EFFECT: more reliable prediction of the risk of developing multiple sclerosis; it is characterised by simplicity and speed of the method; it requires no expensive methods of examination and implies no eye tissue damaging.
