FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: method involves magnetising the lateral surface of a railway wheel in a rotating magnetic field and wetting the inspected sector, superimposed with the wetting zone, with a magnetic suspension. Inspection cycles are carried out while magnetising and wetting, where each cycle includes turning the wheel about its axis in order to select the corresponding inspection sector from the wetting zone and superimpose it with the inspection zone corresponding to the position of the inspection sector. In such a position, the surface of the inspection sector is fixed in a frame and recorded, using a computer program, in a recording medium in form of a pattern having sector boundaries. The inspection cycles are repeated until the surface of each inspection sector is fixed in the corresponding frame. Magnetisation in the a rotating magnetic field is carried out using a corresponding apparatus having a stand with upper and lower cross-beams. The upper cross-beam is fitted with two solenoids, each in form of a frame with a flat-topped shape.
EFFECT: shorter inspection time and high degree of reliability of results of inspecting a railway wheel.
