FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: proposed method of protection comprises heating to 1300-1400°C with holding at maximum temperature for 2-3 hours above pre-roasted lithium carbonate coated with silicon dust layer. Lithium vapours formed at interaction of lithium carbonate and silicon dust vary surface structure and main properties of graphitised carbon units. This results from deep penetration of lithium vapours into pores of carbon unit with subsequent intercalation of graphite layers. Note also here occurs the forming of protective anti-diffusion 20-30 mm deep layer. Said layer blocks melt penetration in electrolytic cell coal hearth and prevents ingress of liquid aluminium and sodium in cell operation.
EFFECT: lower working voltage, higher efficiency, longer life, electric power savings.
