FIELD: metallurgy.

SUBSTANCE: method includes high-temperature electrochemical deposition of coating components from melted electrolyte and synthesis of carbides and borides of refractory metals on the surface of coal and graphite blocks of the hearth. Supply of coating components into the cell, their electric deposition and synthesis of coating compounds are carried out in stages with initial supply of refractory metals into the electrolyte melt, their electric deposition and synthesis of carbides of refractory metals on coal and graphite blocks and subsequent supply of boron into the electrolyte melt, its electric deposition and synthesis of coating compounds in the system of refractory metal-boron-carbon and refractory metal-boron on the hearth surface. Duration of the first stage is determined by reduction of refractory metal concentration in electrolyte from 5.0 to 0.1 wt %. Duration of the second stage is determined by reduction of boron concentration in aluminium from 0.5 to 0.01 wt %.

EFFECT: guaranteed presence of a protective coating on a hearth soaked with aluminium after start-up of a cell, reduction of specific energy consumption for production of aluminium, prevention of damage of carbon lining integrity.
