FIELD: starting aluminum cell after major repairs or after mounting new cell.

SUBSTANCE: method comprises steps of charging part of raw material along periphery of cathode device; firing hearth; pouring liquid electrolyte; electrically connecting cell and feeding to bath solid sodium salts in the form of mixture of flotation and regeneration cryolite taken in quantity 70 -95 mass% of total mass of solid raw material. In order to increase useful life period of cathode device and the whole cell, lithium-containing component is fed together with mixture of flotation and regeneration cryolite in quantity consisting 2.5 - 5.0 mass % (on conversion to lithium fluoride) of total quantity of mixture. Lithium-containing sodium cryolite and(or) lithium cryolite is used as lithium containing component.

EFFECT: increased useful life period of cathode device and the whole cell.
