FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: method includes calculating a plurality of different values of sharpness parameters, each corresponding to a different position of the focusing device. The focusing device is moved to a position which corresponds to the maximum value of the sharpness parameter, determined by comparing the plurality of the calculated different values of sharpness parameters. Focusing is further carried out in two phases, the first of which includes step-by-step scanning of the focusing area, wherein the characteristic of variation of image contrast as the observed object moves along the optical axis of the focusing device is recorded. The second phase includes moving the observed object to a point with the best contrast, which is determined from the results of comparing the function of variation of contrast obtained at the first phase and the current value of contrast.

EFFECT: high accuracy and faster autofocusing process by avoiding search movements of the focusing device.
