SUBSTANCE: invention relates to processing video for motion compensation. The method of performing localised multi-hypothesis prediction comprises steps of: dividing a coding element into a plurality of coding sub-elements, processing the coding sub-elements, wherein the method includes obtaining information on movement of a first set of coded elements, obtaining a plurality of pixel values from the information on movement of a first set of coded elements, using a linear combination of said plurality of pixel values as a predicted pixel value of a specific coding sub-element and outputting a predicted pixel value of another coding sub-element in the coding element using information on movement of a second set of coded elements.

EFFECT: performing localised multi-hypothesis prediction during video coding of a coding element.
