SUBSTANCE: method comprises receiving a transport unit with one or more modulation symbols (y1,…, ym) containing a plurality of encoded information bits (x1,…, xn), inverse transformation of the modulation symbols into a plurality of soft values (LLR1,…, LLRn), calculating a mutual information (MI) metric as a function of the plurality of soft values (LLR1,…, LLRn), wherein the MI metric indicates the mutual relationship between information bits (x1,…, xn) and corresponding soft values of said transport unit, and determining a channel quality index (CQI) as a function of the MI metric.
EFFECT: improved channel quality determination.
