FIELD: physics, computer engineering.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of measuring distance to an object using stereo images. The stereo camera includes two cameras and a calculation unit which calculates distance to the object based on the images acquired by the two cameras. The calculation unit includes an image processing unit which searches for corresponding points of the images acquired by the two cameras and calculates two parallaxes based on differences in positional coordinates of the corresponding points on the images. An offset value calculation unit calculates parallax offset values across the images based on the two parallaxes. A statistical processing unit performs a statistical analysis on the distribution of the parallax offset values and determines an optimum value of the parallax offset values, the optimum value being used as a correction parameter.
EFFECT: correcting parallax offset independent of the shape of the object, time, place and regardless of whether the object is moving or not.
