SUBSTANCE: invention discloses measurement methods and an apparatus for reading a shape using multiple-strand fibre. Change in optical length is detected in some of the strands of the multiple-strand fibre to a certain point on the multiple-strand fibre. The position and/or direction of guidance are determined at a point on the multiple-strand fibre based on the detected changes in optical length. The accuracy of the determined position is better than 0.5% of the optical length of the multiple-strand fibre to a point on the multiple-strand fibre.

EFFECT: determining the shape of a portion of a multiple-strand fibre based on changes in optical length.
