FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to coating metal surfaces, especially wheel rims made of aluminium alloy using a multi-step method. Metal surfaces are first brought into contact with an aqueous composition containing a considerable amount of silane/silanol/siloxane/polysiloxane to form a silane coating, and then with an aqueous composition, primarily containing at least one phosphonic compound. At least 80% of phosphonic compounds in said composition are selected from a group which includes compounds of formula XYZ, wherein Y independently denotes an alkyl group with 8-16 carbon atoms. The method includes successively forming a silane coating and then a phosphonate coating which is provided with at least one lacquer layer and/or at least one adhesive layer.

EFFECT: invention enables to obtain coatings with high corrosion resistance from environmentally safe aqueous compositions.
