FIELD: metallurgy.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for improving the penetrativeness of a coating with an electrophoretic varnish by coating metal surfaces with a pretreatment composition. Method comprises applying to the metal surface an aqueous composition, containing at least one compound a) selected from silanes, silanols, siloxanes and polysiloxanes, among which at least one of these compounds is still able to condensate, and at least one compound b) containing titanium, hafnium and/or zirconium, as well as at least one type of cations c) selected from the metal cations of the secondary subgroups 1 to 3 and 5 to 8, including lanthanides, as well as the 2 main subgroup of the periodic table, and/or at least one corresponding compound c), and/or at least one organic compound d) selected from monomers, oligomers, polymers, copolymers and block copolymers, before being treated with an aqueous composition for silane-based pretreatment, an aqueous treatment with an iron-containing aqueous composition, is carried out.

EFFECT: method for coating metal surfaces with a multi-component aqueous composition is provided.
