SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method and an apparatus for encoding/decoding an image by transforming an image in a pixel domain into coefficients in a frequency domain. Disclosed is a method of encoding an image which comprises steps of: specifying a transformation unit, wherein the size of the transformation unit is greater than that of adjacent prediction units; transforming the transformation unit into a frequency domain and generating coefficients of frequency components; quantising the coefficients of frequency components and entropy encoding the quantised coefficients of frequency components.
EFFECT: setting a transformation unit to be larger than a prediction unit and performing discrete cosine transform (DCT) such that an image is efficiently compressed and encoded.
