SUBSTANCE: disclosed is an image encoding method, comprising obtaining quantised transformation coefficients for a transformation unit in a coding unit; determining a coding unit which is obtained via hierarchical splitting of the maximum coding unit, using splitting information for a coding unit, determining at least one prediction unit which is obtained by splitting the coding unit, using information about a partition type, determining at least one transformation unit which is obtained by splitting the coding unit, using information about partitioning, obtaining residue values for the transformation unit by performing inverse quantisation on the quantised transformation coefficients of the transformation unit, performing intra- or inter-prediction using at least one prediction unit in order to generate a predictor, and restoring the coding unit using residue and predictor values. The invention is split into a plurality of maximum coding units comprising said maximum coding unit, and the size of the transformation unit is determined without taking into account the size of said at least one transformation unit in the coding unit.
