SUBSTANCE: invention relates to application of animations or motions to a character. The method comprises steps of: receiving a pre-recorded motion and a live motion of a user; converting one or more body parts of a virtual character into one or more joints in a first user model associated with live motion; converting one or more body parts of the virtual character into one or more joints in a second model associated with the pre-recorded motion; and animating the virtual character using the pre-recorded motion and the live motion via at least the following: disabling one or more joints in the first user model which correspond to one or more body parts in a second portion of the virtual character; disabling one or more joints in the second model associated with the pre-recorded motion which correspond to one or more body parts in a first portion of the virtual character; and mixing the live motion associated with the first user model with the pre-recorded motion associated with the second model in response to the disabling of one or more joints in the first user model and the disabling of one or more joints in the second model; and animating the first portion and the second portion of the virtual character using the mixed live and pre-recorded motions.
EFFECT: animation of a virtual character using a combination of live and pre-recorded motions.
