FIELD: machine building.
SUBSTANCE: method involves a control system, cylinders with gas distribution valves and piston groups composed of two pistons coupled by a stem, and an external combustion chamber; according to the invention, at travelling of piston groups from one extreme point to another extreme point, the control system in each cylinder switches the gas distribution valves into opposite positions basing on the monitored instantaneous velocity of the piston group. When a piston group arrives at the extreme point, its speed is zero; and at approaching of the piston group to the extreme point the control system switches the gas distribution valves into opposite positions, supply of combustion products from the external combustion chamber to the cavity of one piston and discharge of waste combustion products from the cavity of another piston are stopped, pressure of combustion products remaining in the cavity of another piston is increased and compression of the combustion products remaining in the cavity of another piston results in slowdown and stop of the piston group in the extreme point, so impact of the piston group against the cylinder end is prevented; afterwards the control system of gas distribution valves provides for gas exchange in the power unit cylinders making the piston group move to the opposite extreme point.
EFFECT: prevention of piston group concussion against cylinder ends.
