FIELD: atomic physics.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to means of producing isotopes using an accelerated particle beam. In the disclosed method, an accelerated particle beam (11) is directed towards a first source material contained in a target unit (15) in which a first radioactive isotope (19) is produced via a first nuclear reaction. The particle beam is slowed down as a result. Further, the beam is directed towards a second source material contained in a target unit (21) and a second radioactive isotope (25) is produced via a second nuclear reaction, wherein the effective cross-section for initiating the first nuclear reaction shows a first peak on a first particle energy level, the effective cross-section for initiating the second nuclear reaction through interaction of the accelerated particle beam with the second source material shows a second peak on a second particle energy level, having a value less than the first particle energy level. The disclosed device comprises an accelerator unit (13), a first irradiation target with a first source material and a second irradiation target with a second source material, placed behind the first target.
EFFECT: reducing energy loss during acceleration by enabling one-time acceleration of particles, as well as combining production of different isotopes which require different conditions.
