FIELD: information technologies.

SUBSTANCE: method of automatic measurement of thickness of the layer with fuzzy boundaries using the image is offered. The method comprises the stages during which the image is segmented, the boundary line between the layer segments is drawn, the fractal dimension of the boundary line is calculated, the secants perpendicular to the boundary are superimposed, the secant lengths are determined and an arithmetic average value of the layer thickness is calculated. The image is segmented automatically using the method of growth and merge of areas using the method of minimization of multidimensional heterogeneity functions both at the growth stage, and at the merge stage. When passing along the layer segment the centres of gravity of non-overlapped segments of inclusions with the maximum depth of location in the layer are determined using which the reference secants of inclusions are plotted. The reference points are designated in which the depth of inclusion location on secants is maximum with reference to the base boundary, and using the reference points the approximating function is plotted on the basis of which the lines of fuzzy boundaries are calculated using the method of sliding window with variable width.

EFFECT: improvement of accuracy of determination of layer thickness due to automated identification of fuzzy boundaries.
