FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: in a method of determining optical metamaterial, which includes incidence of a collimated light beam at an angle on a plate of analysed material, both surfaces of said plate are covered with dielectric and opaque coatings, wherein the light beam passes inside the plate through an entrance window whose size is comparable with the thickness of the plate and is made at the centre of in one of the coatings. Determination of whether the material is metamaterial is made based on the position of the output light beam relative to the normal to the boundary surface of the media at the point of incidence.
EFFECT: method is easy to implement experimentally, technologically effective and reliably identifies metamaterial with a negative refraction index.
