FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing 5- and 6-nitro-1-(4-nitrophenyl)-1,3,3-trimethylindanes by reacting 1,1,3-trimethyl-3-phenylindane with nitric acid. According to the disclosed method, nitration of 1,1,3-trimethyl-3-phenylindane is carried out in the presence of a catalyst in the form of amorphous mesoporous aluminosilicate. The reaction is carried out at 100-130°C with molar ratio phenylindane:HNO3=1:6-14 for 8 hours in the presence of 2-4 wt % (with respect to the reaction mixture) catalyst.
EFFECT: method avoids the use of sulphuric acid during nitration, simplifies and lowers the cost of the process.
