SUBSTANCE: invention refers to a method for preparing 2-methyl-4(5)-nitroimidazole consisting in the fact that nitration is conducted by a nitrating mixture containing H2SO4 and HNO3, with molar ratio of the ingredients 2-methylimidazole:H2SO4:HNO3 making 1:4.28:3.83; 95% sulphur acid is 95% is added a little at a time to 2-methylimidazole with avoiding the mixture to be heated to more than 70°C; further, the sulphate solution of 2-methylimidazole is added with 71% nitric acid while stirring at 70°C with avoiding the mixture to be heated more than 100°C; thereafter the reaction is continued at temperature 95-100°C for 5 hours; the cooled reaction mass is neutralised by 25% aqueous ammonia to pH=7-8; the target product is recovered by crystallisation from water in ratio of 2-methyl-4(5)nitroimidazole:water 1:10 and then settled at temperature 2-5°C for 12 hours.
EFFECT: what is developed is the new method for preparing 2-methyl-4(5)-nitroimidazole characterised by cutting time of preparing the target product, its high yield and purity.
