FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: method includes chemical deposition, on the inner surface of a quartz pipe, layers of insulating and reflecting cladding and a fibre-optic core; redrawing the quartz pipe on a drawing apparatus fitted with a high-temperature furnace with azimuthal non-uniform temperature distribution in the walls of the heating element thereof, having two maximum values Tmax and two minimum values Tmin in two orthogonal directions, wherein 2·(Tmax-Tmin)/(Tmax+Tmin)≤0.05-0.10. The process of forming the fibre is carried out with pressure inside the workpiece pipe of 50-500 Pa. The ellipticity is in the range of 1.5-7.0.
EFFECT: simple technique of producing optical fibres by combining collapsing and drawing processes and enabling control of ellipticity of the core.
