SUBSTANCE: invention refers to medicine. A surgical suturing instrument comprises a first portion of the handle with a staple cartridge passage and a second portion of the handle with a thrust plate. Additionally, the suturing instrument comprises a swivel retainer and a retainer projection. The retainer is rotatably connected to one of the first portion of the handle and the second portion of the handle. The retainer projection extends from the other of the first portion of the handle and the second portion of the handle. The retainer is configured to engage with the retainer projection to bring the first and second portions of the handle together.
