The method comprises the measurement of phase current of each separate phase of the bank of capacitors (100), continuous calculation of the mean square value designated as RMS, of the measured phase current (110), measurement of unbalance current (120), continuous calculation of RMS value of the measured unbalance current (130), detection of the phase angle between the measured phase current and its respective measured unbalance current (140), continuous calculation of the value of unbalance current in relative units on the basis of the calculated RMS value of the measured phase current and the calculated RMS value of the measured unbalance current (145), tracking and detection of change in the calculated asymmetry current between the current calculated value of unbalance current in relative units and the previous calculated value of unbalance current in relative units (160), determination of stepped change of value of unbalance current in relative units (170) determination of amount of internal malfunctions and their respective locations on the basis of certain stepped change of value of unbalance current in relative units and the found phase angle (200) and triggering of alarm signal and/or emergency shutdown when a certain total number of malfunctions of internal elements exceeds the first or the second threshold value (210).
