SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method and an apparatus for transmitting a precoding matrix index (PMI) and performing precoding. A method of transmitting PMI comprises steps where: user equipment receives information on transmission channel capability of carrying the PMI, wherein a precoding matrix is selected in accordance with the transmission channel capability of carrying the PMI from a locally stored first group of code tables to form a second group of code tables; selecting a first precoding matrix from the second group of coding tables; transmitting the first index corresponding to the first precoding matrix to a base station over a transmission channel so as to enable the base station to search the first precoding matrix in accordance with said index, and performing data precoding in accordance with the first precoding matrix.
EFFECT: flexible configuration of use of a PMI parameter in accordance with communication channel conditions.
