FIELD: agriculture.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to ecology, namely, biomonitoring and bioindication of the quality of the environment (air) in small, medium and large settlements with the use of a quantitative index of lichenoindication - the lichen index. To do this, the lichen index (L) is calculated, expressed by the ratio of the total area of visually accessible thalli to the area of the surface of the tree trunk by the formula: , where L is lichen index, d1 is the minimum diameter of the lichen thallus (lichen clump (cm)), d2 is the maximum diameter of the lichen thallus (lichen clump (cm)), D is circumference of the tree (cm), H is the distance from the ground, above which there are no two thalli spaced closer than 10 d2, N is the number of thalli of model species of lichen on a tree. At that the smallest absolute value of the lichen index is indicative of the greatest pollution, and the greatest - of the lowest.

EFFECT: invention enables to simplify the method of biomonitoring, to reduce the time-consuming determinations of the species composition of epiphytic lichen flora, and thus, to eliminate subjective factors.
