SUBSTANCE: invention relates to wireless communication and enables to signal all transmission modes without the need for new downlink control channel information formats. The invention discloses a method of operating a communication system, wherein said communication system comprises a master and at least one slave station, wherein the master station selects a transmission mode from a set consisting of at least two transmission modes for interaction with the slave station, and the slave station infers the selected transmission mode based on at least one control channel characteristic.
