FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: one of the versions of the method includes the following steps: feeding acetic acid into an evaporator to obtain a vapour feed stream and a blow-off stream, where the weight ratio of the vapour feed stream to the blow-off stream is at least 2:1, wherein the blow-off stream contains at least 85 wt % acetic acid and less than 1 wt % compounds whose boiling point is higher than that of acetic acid; the vapour feed stream contains at least 70 wt % acetic acid with respect to the total weight of the vapour feed stream; feeding the vapour feed stream into a reactor; and hydrogenating acetic acid from the vapour feed stream in the presence of a catalyst to obtain a crude ethanol product containing ethanol.
EFFECT: versions of the method enable to obtain an end product with improved evaporation of acetic acid for hydrogenation thereof.
