FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: sensor, which differentiates an opening in a metal from a solid metal, is moved on a circle along the side wall of an ampoule cover from the outside or the inside, as a result of which a scan of the deposited mark is obtained. The position of the start mark is determined on the scan from its size, from the centre of the start mark, or from another point situated from the centre of the start mark at a distance less than half the size of the opening of the mark with a step which depends on the number of bits of the binary code of the mark. Bits of the binary code of the mark are consecutively read, which enables recognition of the mark.

EFFECT: high reliability of automatic recognition of identification marks of ampoules with spent nuclear fuel, which is made in the form of an n-bit binary code, symbols of which are through-openings in the lateral surface of the cover of the ampoules.
