FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention describes a method of producing methane from biomass, which includes hydropyrolysis of biomass in a hydropyrolysis reactor to obtain a hydropyrolysis product; separating carbon from the hydropyrolysis product; hydroconversion of the hydropyrolysis product to obtain a hydroconversion product; extracting condensed water and a gaseous mixture containing CO2, H2 and methane from the product; feeding a first portion of the gaseous mixture into a steam reforming apparatus; feeding a second portion of the gaseous mixture into a methanation reactor, wherein the hydropyrolysis and hydroconversion steps are exothermic. A hydropyrolysis method is also described, which includes hydropyrolysis of biomass, hydroconversion of the hydropyrolysis product, extracting liquid water and a gaseous mixture from the hydroconversion product, feeding a first portion of the gaseous mixture into a methane hydrate extraction process, wherein the hydropyrolysis and hydroconversion steps are exothermic.
EFFECT: methods of producing methane which provide improved methane output compared to conventional anaerobic fermentation, gasification or fast pyrolysis.
