SUBSTANCE: invention relates to communication. The invention particularly discloses a communication method which includes receiving input communication signals selected from a set of communication signals, converting the input communication signals into waveforms suitable for transmission using aperiodic functions and transmitting the waveforms suitable for transmission via a communication link. Another method includes receiving waveforms suitable for transmission, which are constructed using aperiodic functions and transmitted via a communication link, and demodulating the waveforms suitable for transmission. The system includes a modulator configured to receive input communication signals selected from a set of communication signals, and converting the input communication signals into waveforms suitable for transmission using aperiodic functions, and a transmitter or transceiver configured to transmit waveforms suitable for transmission via a communication link. Another system includes a receiver or transceiver configured to receive waveforms suitable for transmission transmitted via a communication link and constructed using aperiodic functions, and a demodulator configured to demodulate the waveforms suitable for transmission.
