SUBSTANCE: invention relates to systems for encoding or decoding prediction mode values. Disclosed is a method of deriving reference prediction mode values for prediction mode encoding or decoding. The method comprises a step of deriving first and second reference prediction mode values from respective prediction modes of at least two neighbouring coding units of the current coding unit, the first and second reference prediction modes being different from one another. Further, the method comprises deriving a third reference prediction mode value from the first and second reference prediction mode values, the third reference prediction mode value being different from each of said first and second reference prediction mode values.

EFFECT: high efficiency of encoding and decoding information on prediction modes by deriving the three most probable prediction modes instead of two modes.
