SUBSTANCE: method of initialising context used to encode video data during context adaptive entropy coding comprises the following steps: determining a first initialisation parameter index value as x>>4, where x is an 8-bit parameter; determining a second initialisation parameter index value as x>>15, where x is identical to the 8-bit parameter; determining one or more initialisation parameters for the context adaptive entropy coding process based on the first and second initialisation parameter index values and initialising, based on one or more initialisation parameters, a context state used to encode video data in the context adaptive entropy coding process.
EFFECT: enabling initialisation of coding process contexts by determining initialisation parameter index values.
