FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a catalyst, a method for production thereof and methods for hydrogenating an organic compound in the presence of said catalyst. Disclosed is a particulate catalyst for hydrogenation and dehydrogenation reactions in the form of particles having a size of at least 0.8 mm comprising a transition metal or a compound thereof dispersed on a porous support material. Said catalyst particles comprise at least 35 wt.% of the total transition metal, and the surface area of the transition metal in said catalyst is at least 110 m2/g transition metal, and the tapped bulk density of a bed of catalyst particles is at least 0.7 g/ml, wherein the porous carrier material has a bimodal pore size distribution, and the material of the porous support has a pore volume of at least 1.0 ml/g. A method of making such a catalyst includes several steps of impregnating a porous support with an ammonia solution of the metal followed by drying, calcination and reduction of the dried material.

EFFECT: catalyst is used in a hydrogenation reaction.
