FIELD: agriculture.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to agriculture and veterinary science and designed to determine viability of newborn calves. Method involves taking venous blood from calves 24-36 hours after birth in the morning before feeding, determining cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate concentration in blood serum and calculating the viability index as a ratio of concentration of cortisol (nM/l) to concentration of dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (nM/l). If the viability index is more than 2.0, calves have low viability.
EFFECT: invention enables fast and accurate determination of viability in calves.
