SUBSTANCE: invention relates to techniques for estimating quality of compressed video. Disclosed is a method for estimating video quality of an encoded video stream. Encoded video stream includes macroblock prediction residuals. Method operates on a transport stream level and includes a step of parsing and restoring data from transport stream packets, wherein an elementary stream is obtained. Decoding at least a portion of elementary stream by a selective entropy decoder for obtaining said quantisation parameters and pixel values.
EFFECT: high accuracy and/or effectiveness of video quality measurement due to use of a rational function (QP) and correcting function, depending on content unpredictability (CU), as well as due to that QP and CU are calculated from elementary video stream without full decoding of video.
