FIELD: meteorology.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to meteorology, in particular, to remote measurement of characteristics of atmosphere, and can be used in automated systems for determining weather phenomena hazardous for aviation, as well as in other areas of human activity, wherein knowledge on value of charge of cloud and precipitation particles is necessary. Said result is achieved by dividing electromagnetic signal into electric and magnetic components, measuring separately power of electromagnetic waves, proportional to magnetic and electric components of signal reflected from investigated volume, as well as value of phase shift between them and based on measurement result, determining charge of unit volume of clouds and precipitation by formula

where P ¯ M and P ¯ E denote average power of electromagnetic waves, proportional to magnetic and electric components of signal reflected from analysed volume respectively; λ is electromagnetic wave length; is a constant coefficient; φ is phase shift between electric and magnetic components of radar signal; is volume of atmosphere irradiated by radar (pulse volume); Θ is beam width of radar antenna; τ is duration of probing radar pulse; c is electromagnetic wave propagation speed; R is distance of pulse volume of atmosphere from radar; m is electron mass; e is electron charge; Z0 is wave impedance of medium.

EFFECT: technical result is longer range and higher accuracy in determining charge of unit volume of clouds and precipitation.
