FIELD: measurement technology.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to metrology, in particular to systems for determining position of surface irregularities, their dimensions and number at a distance. Disclosed method for contactless determination of surface relief of materials involves obtaining information on an object using a reading device, processing information by forming a universal surface matrix consisting of information cells, containing information on reference and actual coordinates of surface marks. In addition, a coloristic matrix is formed by reading information from surface illuminated by two opposite light fluxes with different wavelength, directed thereto at acute angles, information is identified in accordance with sequence of colours "first colour – mixing of first and second colour – second colour" as bulge on surface of object, and sequence of "first colour – absence of colour – second colour" as indentation on surface of object. Further, coloristic matrix of surface of object is superimposed on a universal matrix of surface and actual matrix of object and a topographic map of surface of object is obtained, then based on information on reference coordinates of each mark contained in universal matrix of surface, dimensions of identified bulges and indentations on surface of object are determined and their height, depth and number are calculated.
