SUBSTANCE: invention relates to computer engineering. Video decoding method comprises obtaining from a bit stream information of maximum split for external mode and information on prediction mode for coding unit; when information on prediction mode indicates an external mode, determining a maximum split level of a transformation unit based on maximum split information for external mode, wherein transformation unit is determined from coding unit; when a current split level of a current transformation unit is less than maximum split level, obtaining sub-split information about current transformation unit from bit stream; and when sub-split information indicates a split of current transformation unit, splitting current transformation unit into transformation units of a next split level, wherein next split level is greater than current split level; and performing inverse transformation on current transformation unit.

EFFECT: technical result consists in improvement of efficiency of decoding taking into account characteristics of image.
